Agile Leadership for Social Impact services
Friday 24 May 2019

“The greatest teacher, failure is.” - Yoda to Luke Skywalker, The Last Jedi

**Teaching leadership is hard work.**But leadership can be learned, particularly in a room of experienced adults. We invite you to a leadership lab to experience “Agile Leadership for Social Impact Services” in a peer-learning environment.

Our workshop will be short on slides and abstract leadership theory. Instead we will use the collective leadership experience and personal leadership challenges as our learning curriculum. After all, adult leaders learn best from their own struggles.

We will explore and learn strategies that help you diagnose tough challenges, interpret the implications of the challenge and then decide how to intervene effectively to lead change and make progress on complex issues.

The wonderfully engaging Rick Torseth will coach and inspire you into developing your personal leadership capacity. It is up to you to shape the right environment for your teams to work in an Agile way.

During this one-day learning lab, you will learn and experience:

  • How to recognise when you are dealing with complexity
  • Understand the difference between technical problems and wicked problems
  • Determine when to use authority and when to choose to lead
  • Principles behind developing and leading more self-managing teams – working towards Teal

Oh, and have some fun

How we will learn

We will use a teaching method is called Case-in-Point (CIP) developed by Ron Heifetz and Marty Linsky at Harvard University in 1992. This learning model helps leaders bolster their capacities to lead and withstand the stresses of leadership. CIP does so by having people experience leadership challenges in the "here and now," rather than simply discussing leadership concepts. We will also work on our listening, coaching and advising skills by working on a live case into the room. Working on live cases puts real challenges into play, focuses participants and ultimately provides real help for the case presenter and deep learning for everyone.

Our promise for you when you attend this lab is to experience your own leadership capacity in action, learn new concepts and have a few assumptions challenged. We will provide you with leadership frameworks that will help you when you choose to lead when addressing the complexities that hinder the delivery of social impact services.

This is hard leadership work and it is also the most rewarding leadership work.

Leading this session is Rick Torseth who supports, coaches and develops leaders in dealing with complexity. He is known for his innovative work with the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation. Based in Seattle, he works internationally with organisations ranging from Children’s Services in Leicester to Refugees Charity in Amman (Jordan).

Three Wolves, A Monkey, and a Dung Beetle Walk into a Hackathon

Hackathons are an incredible medium for creating new ideas, new friends, and finding out about yourself. As a semi non-technical person (i.e. I don’t code, at least not yet) I’ve always looked at hackathons with a sense of awe, as an unapproachable event that I always wanted to participate in. Well, I finally got my chance and it was an absolute blast!

What was the hackathon all about?

The co-working space as a platform for a token economy

Tokens can become a reward for those that contribute to the community. A community member can earn or sell within the ecosystem when interacting with the community ecosystem (as in: the wider network) or within the co-working space.
